Fujiyoshida has been fairly chilly recently, between the wind and the rain. How is the weather where you are? Fujiyoshida may be quite cool, but Tokyo is already submerged in the summer heat!
みなさんこんにちは！
JES富士吉田のNinaです！最近の富士吉田は風や雨の影響で比較的涼しい日が続いていますが、みなさんの住んでいるところはいかがでしょうか？富士吉田は過ごしやすい気候ですが、東京はすでに夏の暑さに包まれていますよね！
This weekend my sister, friends, and I went to an interactive art museum. It’s not something I speak of often, but I adore museums and art of all sorts, so the recently popular interactive art museums are a big interest of mine and I was certainly looking forward to seeing this particular limited time exhibition.
先週末、姉や友人たちと一緒に体験型ミュージアムへ行ってきました。普段お話する機会が中々ないのですが、私は美術館やさまざまなアートが大好きで、近年人気の体験型アートミュージアムにもとても興味がありました。今回訪れたのは期間限定の展示で、以前からとても楽しみにしていたんです！
In Shinagawa Ward, near the WHAT Museum of Modern Art in Terada Warehouse, a mysterious exhibition popped up – “Yokai Immersive Experience Exhibition” (「動き出す妖怪展」)!
それは品川区にある寺田倉庫のWHAT MUSEUMの近くで開催されていた、
「動き出す妖怪展」です！
Personally, I’ve always been a big fan of different mythologies, legends, folk tales and the like. No matter the country, I find it fascinating how legends about supernatural creatures are formed to explain natural phenomenon and disasters alike. In particular, Japan has an interesting relationship with many of its yokai myths and stories.
私は小さい頃から世界各国の神話や伝説、民話が大好きで、自然現象や災害などを説明するために、人々がどのように超自然的な生き物に関する伝説が生まれるという現象にはいつも興味をそそられます。特に日本では、妖怪にまつわる独特で魅力的な文化があります。
Though typically considered evil and foreboding, signifiers of despair to come, quite a few yokai in the Japanese mythos act more as neutral forces – not evil nor malicious, but simply just existing and, at times, even being helpful. The duality and contrast are an interesting study into human psychology and interpretation, as it was the views of the world that really shaped these myths into existence.
妖怪は一般的に恐ろしい存在や不吉なものとして語られることが多いですが、日本の妖怪には必ずしも悪意のある存在ばかりではありません。善でも悪でもなく、ただそこに存在しているだけのものや、ときには人々を助けるような妖怪もいます。そのような妖怪の多様性は、人々がどのように世界を捉えていたかを映し出しており、人間の心理や価値観を考える上でも非常に興味深いものだと思います。
The exhibit was less devoted to in depth explanations of each individual yokai it introduced, and more focused on the symbolism, the relation to human worldview, and, of course, the history of portrayal. I found it fascinating to know that despite being such a staple of the Japanese language, many yokai and even the word yokai itself were not used commonly until the early Edo period!
今回の展示は、一体一体の妖怪について詳しく解説するよりも、妖怪が持つ象徴性や人々の世界観との関わり、そしてその描写の歴史に焦点を当てた内容でした。特に驚いたのは、「妖怪」という言葉や多くの妖怪たちが、現在では日本文化の代表的な存在として知られているにも関わらず、江戸時代初期まではそれほど一般的なものではなかったということです。
I was also pleasantly surprised by the amount of English translation available at the exhibition. Speaking as foreigner myself, yokai are integral to the view foreigners have of Japanese pop culture, including urban legends and famous folk tales. Yet not a lot of credible and historical information is available about these creatures in English. So, seeing an exhibition so devoted to the sharing what a truly unique and large aspect of Japanese culture yokai are to foreign audiences was truly inspiring.
また、展示には英語での説明が数多く用意されていたことにも感心しました。外国人である私自身の視点から見ても、妖怪は都市伝説や昔話などと並び、日本のポップカルチャーを語る上では欠かせない存在です。しかし、英語では妖怪に関する信ぴょう性の高い歴史的な情報がそれほど多くありません。そのため、この展示が海外の方々に向けて妖怪文化の魅力や奥深さを発信していることに、とても感銘を受けました。
Much like the origin of yokai, people fear that, which they do not understand, and no true coexistence and cooperation can come when fear is the underlying emotion. That’s why, now more than ever before, in the global society of today learning languages of all kinds is important. Having even one second language available to communicate in changes the field of communication immensely. It is our duty as teachers to make sure that students understand this and show their own enthusiasm to learning, starting with the most readily available option – English.
妖怪が生まれた背景にも通じることですが、人は理解できないものに対して恐れを抱きがちです。そして、その恐れが根底にある限り、本当の意味での共存や協力は難しいのかもしれません。だからこそ、グローバル化が進む現代社会では、さまざまな言語を学ぶことがこれまで以上に重要になっているのだと思います。たった一つでも第二言語を身につけることで、人とのコミュニケーションの可能性は大きく広がります。私たちJES教師も、生徒たちがその大切さを理解し、自ら学ぶ意欲を持てるよう、まずは身近な英語学習を通してサポートしていきたいと考えています！
So, with all that said, I hope that everyone doesn’t lose motivation while working through the summer heatwaves and keeps focus. Let’s do our best together!
